Normally when Mister and I go check in to a local hotel for a "staycation," we leave 'Lil with Grandma and Grandpa Peg.
But when she saw just all that was on offer at the Travelodge Winnipeg East -- especially with their Tropical Pool Area -- we just didn't have the heart to say no.
With summer winding down we like to make sure 'Lil can get still get her swimming in, so what better way to do so then to stay in absolute comfort in this rather charming Winnipeg hotel?
We booked rooms that faced the Tropical Pool Area which, with its palms and lush vegetation (all real plants! no artificial stuff here), made us feel like we were in a balmy oasis without even having to get on an airplane. 'Lil splashed around in the unique L-shaped pool, while Mister and I watched from the steamy comfort of the hot tub. Who needs a spa, when you can lap in such luxury?
While lounging we met another young family from out-of-town, who have been staying here for years now when they come to the city to visit friends in St. Vital. 'Lil and their daughter really hit it off, and when they told us that they were going to head downstairs for "cosmic bowling" at Alpine Lanes, we were in. It had been too long since I went bowling under the black and neon lights, and we had an absolute blast.
Mister was so pleased with his bowling that he signed us up for their regular Thursday night mixed league. We play our first league game next week -- we're calling ourselves the Peg City Pin Drops -- and we're totally going to run the table.
After taking it to the pins we were just about ready for bed. We said good bye to our new friends and were making our way through the Travelodge's jazzy lobby when we couldn't help but notice the good times being had in the adjacent Doubles Fun Club bar. With 'Lil with us we couldn't exactly hit the dance floor to the jams from the live band; although we would have, that place looked happening.
Once upstairs we were welcomed back to our quiet, clean, spacious room.
The Travelodge is an absolute bargain and has everything you'll look for in a top-notch hotel. The shower pressure in the pristine bathroom was all I would hope for, while our king size bed made me feel like I was sleeping in acres of space. (There was even enough room to keep me away from Mister's incessant spooning -- what can I say, I love the guy and a good cuddle and all, but sometimes a girl likes to take up some territory when she's sleeping). 'Lil, being so little, was just fine on the sofa bed (she actually used the extra cushions to build a little fort, it was pretty cute).
Our huge room came out to just over 100 bucks, which was a steal of a deal.
And the staff... My word, what an assortment of the most affable people! The woman who was working the desk was an absolute gem, while all the rest of them were courteous to a tee, making our stay that much more pleasant.
When morning came we nearly felt reluctant to leave. We all did breakfast in their Marquee Restaurant for under $20 for the three of us, then packed up the car and headed back home.
If only all our staycations could be this affordable, comfortable and fun.
