It's almost summer (spring?), right? I know, winter has been sticking with us and apparently will have to be taken away kicking and screaming as it clings to us for dear life, but the forecast this weekend... temperatures in the plusses for days and days.
I stopped wearing a winter coat three days ago. I almost wore sandals today (except then I remembered I don't have feet). I am so excited I gave myself a splinter.
While normally warm weather activities would be in full swing around the city, this weekend will be the first time we truly get to enjoy the turning of the season. A trip to Bridge Drive-In last night reminded me of all those 'rites of spring' that it's time to enjoy. So today, I give you the top 10 things to do to welcome the warm weather to Winnipeg.
- Go to Bridge Drive-In (surprise) and get some ice cream. The Goog is always popular in its delectable mammothness and our own songstress/fiddler Sierra Noble told me on Twitter last night that their sundaes are her favourite.
- Head to The Forks. Get a coffee, stroll the paths, enjoy the sun. Enough said.
- Head to the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden in Assiniboine Park. These guys have been lonely all winter (or so I assume)--go pay them a visit.
- Head to VJ's Drive Inn for a fat boy. If you've never tried Winnipeg's specialty--a delectable burger doused in chili and dreams--then it's time. Order it and pull up to a nearby picnic table to enjoy with a lot of napkins.
- Take a drive down River Road. This is one of my favourite things to do--the river, the beautiful houses that I pretend I live in--it's all good (even if a little delusional).
- Go to Old Market Square. Get a poutine from Smoke's and just sit. Sit. Sit. Sit. Outside. Where it's warm.
- Hit the patios. Tavern United's roof top is one of my favourite places to nosh and admire the view of downtown. Will it be weird that you can still see several feet of snow around the city when it's 18 deg C? (Nah, this is part of the city's charm.)
- Go shopping in Osborne Village. What's better than strolling through the shops, picking out cute summer dresses and then stopping in for a nibble Kawaii Crepe? Um, nothing.
- Visit Assiniboine Park Zoo's newest addition--Hudson the polar bear. He comes from a cold place, so he's pretty excited about summer too.
- Get a head start on that swing at one of the city's golf courses. (Although I suspect the die-hards are already well ahead of you.)
