After almost two years of its inaugural run, Qaumajuq’s (KOW-ma-yourq) INUA exhibit has come to an end. The Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG)-Qaumajuq has created an equally impressive exhibit to continue showcasing the incredible stories, sculptures, drawings, clothing, printmaking and film of Inuit (Canada), Kalaallit (Greenland), Yup’ik and Unangax/Aleutian artists (Alaska and Siberia).
Visit WAG-Qaumajuq to experience Inuit Sanaugangit: Art Across Time, a celebration of sanaugangit (sa-now-gan-eet or sa-now-gah-knee), “art by Inuit”— a survey of artistic expression from approximately 200 BCE until the present day. This exhibit opens this weekend and runs from April 1, 2023 through January 7, 2024.
Curated by Dr. Darlene Coward Wight and Jocelyn Piirainen, Inuit Sanaugangit: Art Across Time is a massive exhibit featuring nearly 400 works of art from the circumpolar Arctic which sets the tone for future research and exhibitions exploring works of artists across the north.
An opening celebration of Inuit Sanaugangit will take place March 31, 2023 and is free to the public. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. featuring throat singing from Inuk artists Goota Ashoona and Mary Ashoona, beats by The Kaptain and a cash bar plus time to explore this impressive exhibit.
