Friday, September 30, 2022 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On this day we recognize the First Nation, Métis and Inuit survivors of Residential Schools and commemorate those who did not return. We join with our partners, other organizations in our community and Destination Indigenous in recognizing the path towards reconciliation is ongoing.
September 30 is also known as Orange Shirt Day, and people wear orange T-shirts to acknowledge the impact of residential schools on Indigenous peoples.
Many of our partners have special programming on September 30 and here are some events happening throughout our community to help you honour and reflect on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Smudge the North End Event
Indigenous Vision for the North End and other community organizations will be handing out supplies and smudging.

The Saint-Boniface Museum Bowl-Giving Ceremony
The Saint-Boniface Museum will be holding a bowl-giving ceremony to honour 250 years of Indigenous women.

The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN)
Will be showcasing special programming throughout the day.

Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN)
In partnership with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR), APTN is producing a one-hour live broadcast and national commemorative gathering called Remembering the Children: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which will take place at LeBreton Flats Park in Ottawa. The one-of-a-kind event will be led by children and residential school survivors and will air simultaneously across all APTN channels.
APTN will broadcast 35 hours of special programming to honour residential, day and boarding school survivors as well as their families and the children who never made it home.
This special programming will begin at 7 p.m. on Sept. 29, 2022. It will be available on all APTN channels and later on APTN lumi.

Culture Days
Culture Days, a three-week celebration of art and culture has set September 30, 2022 aside to create space exclusively for events organized to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, including those aimed at sharing First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit experiences and perspectives celebrating the creative and cultural expressions of Indigenous people and communities.
Children’s Museum
Free general admission on a journey of education and reflection with Louis Riel Institute for a Métis Moccasin workshop and Métis Paper Vest workshop.

Guests of all ages are encouraged to wear an orange shirt to help raise awareness of the impacts of residential schools and in remembrance – every child matters.
Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG)-Qaumajuq
In partnership with WAG-Qaumajuq, The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) will host a one-hour national broadcast, followed by the launch of Lessons in Legitimacy: Colonialism, Capitalism and the Rise of State Schooling in British Columbia with Dr. Sean Carleton, and take part in a public discussion on what you need to know about the history and legacy of Indian Residential Schools.
General admission fees will be donated to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, reflective of WAG's ongoing efforts to respond to the TRC Calls to Action.
Self-identifying Indigenous peoples are always welcome, free of charge.

Assiniboine Park
There will be a change in hours of operation out of respect for the importance of September 30 as an opportunity for the community to pause and reflect on the tragic legacy of Canada’s residential school system and honour the Survivors of residential schools, the children who never came home, their families and communities.
Orange lapel ribbons purchased from Dreamcatcher Promotions will be offered to visitors at the Zoo, Park Café and The Pavilion with a request for donations.
Thirty per cent of sales earned on September 30 from Zoo admissions and Park and Zoo restaurants plus one hundred per cent of ribbon donations will be divided evenly and donated to the Orange Shirt Society and Wa-Say Healing Centre.

Manitoba Museum
To honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Manitoba Museum will provide complimentary admission to the Museum Galleries, Planetarium and Science Gallery from Friday, September 30 to Sunday, October 2. They invite guests to wear orange.
Orange Shirt Days at the Manitoba Museum will feature special, all-day programming in the Museum Galleries focused on the history of Indian Residential Schools and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action.

Canadian Museum for Human Rights
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights launched a new website for the Witness Blanket, a monument that recognizes the atrocities of Canada's Indian residential school system.
Assembled by Indigenous artist Carey Newman/Hayalthkin’geme @blueravenart the Witness Blanket is a large-scale work of art inspired by a woven blanket. It contains hundreds of items reclaimed from residential schools, churches, government buildings and traditional and cultural structures from across Canada.

A Day to Listen 2022
In recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th, the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF) will partner with major media outlets and radio stations throughout Canada on A Day to Listen 2022 from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time.
This year, they are highlighting the voices and stories of Indigenous Peoples around the theme "Message of Hope" focusing on four areas: cultural reclamation, language resurgence, art practice and land-based learning narratives.

Dalnavert Museum
Métis artist Tracey-Mae Chambers has been travelling the USA and Canada creating installations that broach the subject of decolonization as part of her #hopeandhealingcanada project.
The installations contemplate themes of connection, reflection and healing and are made of red yard–including large pre-made crochet and knit pieces. Her installations contain splashes of orange yarn to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The completed installation is now available to view for free on the veranda at Dalnavert and will be on display for several months.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders will both be wearing special orange New-Era jerseys on Friday's game on National Truth and Reconciliation Day. The jerseys will then be made available for an online auction after the game with funds raised being donated to Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre (WASAC).
The Bombers also announced that the game will feature an anthem sung in Ojibwe by Strong Warrior Girls Anishinaabe Singers. Pow wow singers, dancers and drummers featuring Ray CoCo Stevenson and the Walking Wolf Singers will lead them onto the field prior to kickoff. Halftime will also feature the Norman Chief Memorial Dancer, leaders from the Indigenous Community will take part in the coin toss, and four language and culture advocates will be honoured during the game.
Fans are encouraged to wear orange as well.
