Day 1: Friday
Rise, shine, and make some...coin? Let’s activate that Attractions Pass at the Royal Canadian Mint (open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Fridays)!
The Mint makes for the perfect place to start your adventure in the ‘Peg. As you drive by the facility, something that you’ll notice is a row of flags lining the outside of the building. Fun fact: each of these flags represents one of 73 countries that the Mint has had a hand in creating coins for. An even more fun fact? The Mint is a state-of-the-art high-volume manufacturing facility that produces all Canadian coins that are in circulation. In other words, every single coin used by Canadians in everyday transactions (dimes, quarters, loonies, etc.) is produced in the building.
After exploring this one-of-a-kind attraction (and maybe getting a cool souvenir from the gift shop), head over to Osborne Village and get a glimpse of the city’s creative side. This eclectic and artsy Winnipeg neighbourhood features lots of shopping and dining options so it’s the perfect spot to kick off the weekend. Plus, this area is perfect to check out some of the city’s best live music dive bars and watering holes.
Feeling hungry? Head over to the Village’s main strip where you can find Winnipeg staples like A Little Pizza Heaven, Nuburger or Wakoya Sushi. For delicious Mexican food options, you can also check out Carlos & Murphy’s or Burrito Del Rio. Sous Sol is another great spot if you’re feeling like French food.
If you’re craving dessert, you can go over to Baked Expectations and try their Shmoo Torte – a Winnipeg specialty that features angel food cake layered with pecans, whipped cream and caramel sauce. There’s also Kawai Crepe or Chocoberry which are amazing options as well!
After lunch, head over to the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada (open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Fridays). This modern facility showcases the history of flight as well as fun interactive artifacts that take your excitement to new heights! You can board whole commercial aircraft, check out open-air helicopters, experimental spaceships, and more. Something to note: The Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada remains one of the largest and most complete aviation heritage collections in Canada.
Day 2: Saturday
Start your day off bright and early to try The Original Pancake House in The Forks. You can also try Danny’s All-Day breakfast which is in The Forks Market (highly recommend the Bacon & Eggs Breakfast and Bacon Pan Scramblers). After breakfast, you can go sightseeing or explore a plethora of local shops and boutiques located nearby.
Head over to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) (open 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturdays) once you're finished exploring. Less than a five-minute walk from The Forks, this architectural marvel is the first museum solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. Outside, you will notice the facility’s intricate glass design, while inside the ever-climbing interactive exhibits will take you from darkness to light. With galleries and exhibits surrounding themes about human rights both in Canada and in other places in the world, the CMHR melds modern technology, storytelling, and art to create an immersive experience that highlights the importance of rights for all people.
After the CMHR, you can walk through Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District, which is only a ten-minute walk away from the museum. In this neighbourhood, you can discover unique boutiques, art galleries, and eateries. And while you’re here, be sure to stop by the Manitoba Museum (open 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)!
In the museum, you’ll be able to discover numerous artifacts that capture the history of Manitoba. Travel through millions of years from north to south across Manitoba’s vast landscape, from the icy arctic coast in the north to the windswept prairies. This facility also showcases an array of unique exhibits and galleries such as the Hudson’s Bay Gallery and Nonsuch Gallery, which features a 17th-century replica of the Nonsuch ship which you can actually board. Another featured gallery transports you back in time to "explore" the 1920s in Winnipeg.
Day 3: Sunday
Start the day in the great outdoors at FortWhyte Alive (open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.). Located in the southwest area of Winnipeg, this 660-acre urban oasis is truly something that can’t be missed. Trails through the aspen forests are great for hiking, biking, and checking out wildlife. You can also grab breakfast or brunch from the Buffalo Stone Café while looking out onto its lakes.
Just a stone’s throw away from FortWhyte Alive is Seasons of Tuxedo where you can check out Outlet Collection Winnipeg, IKEA, and several other big-box stores and local eateries (like Pho Hoang and Holy Spice East Indian). For families, the Golf Dome or the Rec Room are also fun-filled options that will surely entertain.
