So, it's finally that rite of summer that we all look forward to. The Winnipeg Fringe Festival got underway this week, which is probably why you've seen strange characters trolling the Exchange District dressed as mad scientists, wearing hoop skirts and balancing watermelons on their heads (I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried).
For true Fringe fans, July is like Christmas. I know a few people who book the entire two weeks off work so they can Fringe until their eyes start to cross.
Obviously that kind of hard core commitment isn't a requirement to enjoy the festival--all you need is a sense of adventure, a few dollars in your pocket and some strong coffee (you know you're getting old when a midnight showing makes you tired before you even get there).
Shows range in price from $5-$10 and there are even a bunch of shows offering 2 for $10 deals. Pick up a pass to score an even better deal and don't forget to take advantage of the free bus service available--especially if you've had a little too much fun in the beer gardens. But you would never do that right?
One of the best things about the Fringe Fest is that not everything takes place indoors in darkened theatres either.
The Exchange District comes alive during the festival where food trucks and vendors dish out yummy food and eclectic wares. Old Market Square is a buzzing hive of activity offering free entertainment and concerts and lots of fun for kids.
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be sorry if you miss it.
