I admit it. I’m a Halloween Junkie. I can’t get enough of the decorations, the spooky (cheesy) recorded sounds and the art of pumpkin carving. I spend days crafting homemade costumes and ages planning my front yard for optimal fright – rigging fishing wire through windows to make skeletons jump out at passing trick-or-treaters and turning the lawn into a graveyard with wriggling body parts. And I always make my best effort to prolong the festivities. October 31st is just the culmination of weeks of fun exploring Winnipeg’s Halloween entertainment… and let me tell you, there is plenty to choose from.
Top 5 Kid-Friendly Halloween Excursions
The Forbidden Forest & Haunted Hayride at Deer Meadow FarmsTake the new Haunted Hayride on a journey across the farm and encounter disturbing elements along the way. Then get dropped off at the entrance to the Forbidden Forest where all sorts of spooky scenes and scares await. They’ve done a great job of making daytime haunts less scary so children to enjoy the hayride and forest without the BIG scares.
Six Pines annual October Haunt Six Pines is well known for its terrifying Fear by Night, but the tamed down Fun By Day offers the perfect level of spookiness for children. It’s a wonderfully interactive experience for families offering trick-or-treating with a variety of spook-tacular events for boys & ghouls of all ages. Braver kids can enter the Terror Train and the Barn of Doom - tuned down for the little ones, but still scary!
Howlin’ Halloween Express at PDC Railway It’s all aboard at Inkster Junction Station for a screaming good time this Halloween on the Prairie Dog Central’s Howlin’ Halloween Express. Watch out as Igor makes his way through the coaches looking for his favourite costume. Enjoy this spooky ride packed with entertainment and goodies.
The Haunted Hangar Old airplanes are a haunting ground for ghosts pilots at the Haunted Hangar? On Oct. 25, the Western Canada Aviation Museum is hosting a haunted event for the whole family with ghost stories, tricks and treats, and close encounters with the museum’s airplanes.
Birds Hill Park’s Halloween at the Hill On Oct. 26 little ghouls and goblins will gather at Birds Hill to hunt for creatures of the night and find out how to stop the evil witch from casting her magic spell. Wear your costume, if you dare, and take a guided witch’s walk, get you face painted, and enjoy the campfire, crafts and the haunted forest all for free. For a small fee you can also take a hayride through the dark.
